Last night’s storm caused significant damage to some local farms. The winds destroyed several Haygrove tunnels at Peregrine Farm. Farmers Alex and Betsy Hitt grow heirloom tomatoes and cut flowers under these tunnels.

Read Peregrine Farm’s account of the damage.

Tunnels covered in plastic are vulnerable to high winds. Growers will remove the plastic before a tropical storm or hurricane with advance warning, but there is no way to predict or prepare for the high winds from a fast-moving thunderstorm.

Other farms also had wind damage and were still without power 24 hours later. Over the weekend a Chatham farm lost five cattle to a lightning strike.
