Cooperative Extension conducts the Junior Dairy Show every year around the state where kids ages 5-18 show dairy heifers and cows. This one was in Orange County but included participants from surrounding counties. The dairy show was organized by Extension Dairy Agent Marti Day.

Here are the dates for Marti’s 2012 dairy shows:

June 15: Central Carolina District Junior Dairy Show in Hillsborough, NC

July 31-August 1: Greensboro District Junior Dairy Show in Greensboro, NC

If you know children interested in showing dairy heifers, contact Marti Day at 919-691-3062. Just because you don’t have a calf doesn’t mean you can’t show; no experience is required and greenhorns are welcomed! This is a nice 6 week project that gives kids a chance to get a taste of working with livestock without a big investment of time or money. I really enjoy seeing the kids interact with the animals and they tell me how much they get out of it and love working with the heifers. Check out the photos and you will see it in their faces!
