Boy Showing Heifer

The 75th annual Central Piedmont Junior Livestock Show and Sale was recently held on April 13th and 14th in Hillsborough, NC. The tradition began on April 24, 1946, in Durham. This is the 33rd year the show was held at the Central Carolina Holstein Association Barn in Orange Grove. The show was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19 concerns. This event is open to 4-H and FFA youth ages 5-18 in Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, Durham, Granville, Guilford, Orange, Person, Wake, Randolph, and Rockingham counties.

The following section on this press release was written by a current Alamance County 4-H member, Aiden Kernodle. “Three members of the Alamance County 4-H put in hard work and excelled at the recent 2021 Central Piedmont Junior Livestock Show. Day one started with meat goats, when Sage Robinson (12) and brother, Hutch Robinson (10), did an amazing job showing their goats. It was their second time showing at this show. The Robinsons each showed three goats: two market goats and one meat goat doe. Sage’s doe placed 1st in her class, while one market goat placed 2nd and the other placed 5th in its class. Sage won Reserve Champion (2nd place) Showmanship for the entire class of junior showman. Hutch, also a junior showman, got 2nd place in his doe class; his smaller market goat got 4th place in its class; and his larger market goat won 1st in its class. Aiden Kernodle (15) showed his Hereford heifer for the first time. He placed 3rd in his senior showmanship class and 4th in the heifer type class. All participants are required to submit a project record book to participate in the show. These books are judged, and Sage Robinson received 2nd place for her book in the 11-12 age group. Aiden Kernodle received 2nd place for his book in the 13-15 age group.”

It takes a lot of community support from civic groups, businesses, and individuals in sponsorship funds to put together an event like this. N.C. Cooperative Extension agents and vocational agriculture teachers work with the youth to advise on raising and showing animals. Youth show several different types of animals in this event, including hogs, sheep, goats, and beef cattle.
