Currituck County 4-H Animal Science Programs are open to all youth – with or without a farm background. In Currituck these programs include events and activities, both individually and in groups, focused on livestock, equine science, poultry, and small companion animals. They offer youth the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in animal care, health & nutrition, breeding & genetics, career options, and the emerging technology being used in support of environmentally sustainable systems. More importantly, youth learn compassion and responsibility for living things, perseverance, decision making, initiative, detail organization, effective communications and record keeping; all while having fun at the same time. Animal science program events and activities include judging teams, skill-a-thons, quiz bowls, arts and crafts contests, livestock and equestrian shows, and photography contests.

Animal Science Informational Meeting

Please join the 4-H staff for an Animal Science informational meeting to learn about all the animal science programs that are offered through Currituck County 4-H. This meeting will be held November 7, 2019  at 6:00 p.m. at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Currituck County Center located at 120 Community Way, Barco, NC 27917. A key focus of this program will be the 2019 Albemarle Area 4-H Livestock Show and Sale; an event which affords youth ages 5-18 the opportunity to raise, exhibit and sell a market quality animal (goat, sheep, hog and or steer).

Information about Poultry Projects (both Turkey and Chicken),  Small & Companion Animals (dog, cat, rabbit, etc.) and the Currituck County Horse program will also be presented at this meeting. There are many opportunities for youth to participate in horse-related activities such as horse bowl, horse judging, artistic expressions that do not require you to own a horse.

If any of these topics interest you or your child, mark your calendar and plan to attend this meeting on November 7, 2019, at 6 p.m. For more information about this meeting, 4-H animal science projects or for accommodations for persons with disabilities, contact Stephanie Minton at 232-2262 or via email at stephanie_minton@ncsu.edu

4-H is North Carolina’s largest youth development organization, equipping more than 263,000 young people each year with the skills to succeed and improve the world around them. 4-H programs and camps encourage young people to “learn by doing,” helping them to develop into active, contributing citizens. NC State Extension and the Cooperative Extension Program at N.C. A&T State University coordinate 4-H programs statewide.
